Warning: 1 troy oz 100mil .999 silver items are not bullion!!!
The above items in various forms and weights (silver maple bars being common) are for sale through various mediums in New Zealand. The obscure wording of sellers has the potential for those not familiar with bullion to pay well over what these are worth. There are instances of these $6.00 items (and that is being generous) netting sellers similar returns to that of 1oz .999 pure silver bullion items. Hence the attraction to the hawkers selling them.
Warning; these are not bullion. They are what is referred to as shit metal covered in a very thin coating/gloss of .999 silver. The weight of actual .999 silver content is so miniscule it is almost impossible to measure. In fact, the coating is a scientific marvel in itself in that it is amazing it is possible to create a layer so thin and still cover the item. These are fabricated in China and purchased en masse through suppliers in the USA/Canada.
Recent and current sales have seen/are seeing buyers pay similar prices to what they would expect to pay for real bullion items. This is a clear indication buyers do not understand they are buying a worthless trinket as opposed to bullion.
It would appear forums which allow the sale of these items are happy for obscure descriptions to be used.
How to spot these items.
- Any use of words such as 100mils.
- Any item (despite any accompanying reference to .999 silver) where there is 100mils used in the description or is on the item.
- Mention of 100mils .999 silver and no additional mention of the fact the main substance is copper or similar cheap ass metal.
- Unanswered questions on auctions of these items.
Of course if you are happy to pay $50 for a $6 item then good luck to you. Similarly if you know what you are buying and are paying a fair price then, again, good luck to you. We would be interested in hearing from anyone who has purchased these thinking they were .999 silver bullion.
